What Martin & Orloff Is About
Lawrence Blume’s 2002 comedy is the story of a marketing man and his psychiatrist. Martin is sent to Orloff after a suicide attempt, and the doctor turns out to be considerably less stable than the patient, so the two of them spend a day that starts at a softball game and keeps expanding across the city. Along the way there is a stripper with a doctorate, a veteran who left his mind in the Gulf, and an enormous costume shaped like a rack of ribs. The film has no hesitation about putting Hong Kong action beats next to melodrama. The cast comes out of improv: Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh, H. Jon Benjamin and Amy Poehler are among them.
