What Mazeppa Is About
The film turns around the painter Théodore Géricault. The man wants to understand horses. That curiosity takes him to a circus. At the head of the circus is Antonio Franconi. Franconi is a well known horseman. Géricault decides to move in with the circus. From then on he paints nothing but horses. He is trying to work out the mystery of the animal. Franconi teaches him to step outside convention. An odd relationship forms between the two of them. A woman rider tries to draw the painter’s interest. His mind, though, is still on the horses. The film takes its name from Byron’s poem Mazeppa. The story folds a spectacle and a narrative into each other. Miguel Bosé and Bartabas appear in the hundred and eleven minute film, a French production Bartabas finished in 1993.
