What Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno Is About
A young man who has left medicine in Paris to try writing screenplays returns for the summer to the coastal town he comes from. He photographs his relatives, his friends and the beach all summer. The film proceeds almost without plot; the narrative is made of long meal, beach and nightclub scenes and what is happening between the characters never becomes clear. The camera stays insistently close to bodies, and that choice was argued over. Abdellatif Kechiche directed. It was shot in the south of France and adapted from a novel. A real warning: there are long, explicit sex scenes, and the way the camera frames the women performers was heavily criticised. It runs close to three hours.
