What Mephisto Is About
Hendrik Höfgen is an ambitious provincial stage actor who wants Berlin and the big parts. When the Nazis take power, some of his friends flee and others simply disappear; Höfgen stays and becomes a favourite of the new owners. Mephisto in Faust is the triumph of his career, and he has made the same bargain offstage that he plays every night. Szabó adapted Klaus Mann's novel, which was itself built on a real actor. Brandauer's face carries what self-deception looks like.
