Born in South Tyrol in 1944, Reinhold Messner was first taken up a mountain by his father as a child; he went on to climb all fourteen of the world’s summits above eight thousand metres and in 1980 reached the top of Everest alone and without oxygen. The documentary builds that journey out of Messner’s own account, the testimony of those close to him and of his climbing companions, archive footage and reconstructed scenes. The film does not set out to glorify him; it shows that the man draws his strength from his failures as well. Peter Habeler and Hans Kammerlander also speak in Andreas Nickel’s hundred and eight minute German production. When he is not climbing, Messner exhibits his equipment and the objects he has collected at his castle at Juval, and he has written some fifty books.
