Meteors

In 2015 fighting escalated in the southeast of Turkey and curfews were declared across the region. In those days it became close to impossible to get independent news out of the area. People living there filmed the empty streets in single takes, in clips an hour long; the recordings were put on the internet and then disappeared. The film sets out from that footage. Falling across the same days is the Leonid meteor shower, brief lights appearing in a dark sky. The work stands somewhere between documentary and fiction. How long an image lasts is the real matter of the account. Ebru Ojen Şahin is in the cast of Gürcan Keltek’s eighty four minute film, a joint Turkish and Dutch production, completed in 2017.
