What Michael Inside Is About
Michael, eighteen, lives with his grandfather on a Dublin housing estate and is caught holding a bag of drugs for his friend’s older brother, drawing a three-month sentence. The film is about what those three months turn him into: how the things you learn in order to survive inside stay on you after you get out, and how a sentence does not end when its term does. Frank Berry wrote, directed and co-produced, treating the prison system not as thriller material but through its consequences. Dafhyd Flynn plays Michael and Lalor Roddy his grandfather. It premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh, where it was named best Irish film, and went on to win the IFTA for best film in 2018.
