What Milarepa Is About
Neten Chokling's 2006 film tells the early life of Milarepa, one of Tibet's best-known saints, from a life story passed down orally for centuries. After the sudden death of his father costs him his inheritance and his home, the young Milarepa goes off to learn black magic in order to settle the account for what was done to his family. Magicians, frightening presences and a teacher whose intentions are hard to read appear along the way. The lesson that matters, though, comes from facing what his anger has caused. It was shot in the Lahaul-Spiti region of northern India, and that landscape is one of its strongest elements. A saint's story told without turning into a sermon.
