What Miranda's Victim Is About
Phoenix, 1963. Trish Weir, eighteen years old, is abducted and raped. Her attacker, Ernesto Miranda, is arrested and confesses. But his rights were never read to him when that confession was taken. The case goes to the Supreme Court and becomes the Miranda ruling: the lines American police read to everyone they take into custody come from here. For Trish the outcome is something else. Her own life is put on trial for years, the case is heard again, and each time she has to tell it from the beginning. Michelle Danner directs, with Abigail Breslin as Trish and Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe, Emily VanCamp and Andy Garcia in the cast. The film does not argue against those rights; it asks who paid for them.
