What Mirror for a Hero Is About
Sergei and Andrei are walking through a park when they come across a film shoot set just after the war. Climbing the fence for a better look, they step on a cable lying in the grass and find themselves genuinely in the past: 8 May 1949, a mining town in the Donbass. The next morning the same day starts again, and then again, and again. Vladimir Khotinenko's 1987 film comes from a novella by Svyatoslav Rybas. It builds the repeating-day idea six years before Hollywood's famous version. Sergei gets to see his father as a young man and understands him for the first time; Andrei tries to save the men who are going to die in a mine about to collapse. It is a parable about the impossibility of changing the past.
