What Miss Europe Is About
Lucienne, a typist, decides to enter the Miss Europe pageant run by the newspaper she works for. Her jealous lover Andre objects so violently that she tries to withdraw, but by then it is too late and she has already been named Miss France. On the night Andre had planned to propose, she is in Spain for the final, surrounded by admirers. The film was conceived as a silent one, from a story by G. W. Pabst and Rene Clair with Clair set to direct; when the decision was taken to make it with sound he withdrew and Augusto Genina took over. It was Louise Brooks’s first sound film, though every line she speaks and every note she sings was dubbed by somebody else, and its famous ending turns on a single sound effect.
