What Mr. Nobody Against Putin Is About
Pavel Talankin is the videographer at a school in the Russian town of Karabash. After the invasion of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education instructs schools to film their patriotic education programmes, and Talankin films them, then sends the footage abroad rather than to the ministry. David Borenstein builds a documentary out of that material, and the result is a first-hand record of how propaganda is taught to children. To protect the people in it the footage was reviewed frame by frame and some powerful testimony was deliberately removed. Talankin has since left the country and is credited as co-director. It won a special jury award at Sundance in 2025. Who it is for: viewers who want to understand contemporary Russia and how state propaganda operates. Who it is not for: anyone expecting detached political analysis, since this rests on testimony.
