Mukundan Unni Associates™

In a small town, the lawyer Mukundan Unni cannot get a case. Chasing accident clients, he finds a way forward: removing his rivals. He does it without guilt, explaining himself to the audience in voiceover. Abhinav Sunder Nayak's first film. Vineeth Sreenivasan plays Mukundan. Its nerve is never absolving its protagonist. The character is a sociopath, and the film presents that not as a dramatic flaw but as a functioning system, the road to success itself. The narration is what holds it together. Mukundan describes his plans in a calm tone, and the calm is where the comedy comes from. Vineeth Sreenivasan was generally known for likeable characters, and the inversion here was much discussed in India. It belongs to the hard black-comedy vein of recent Malayalam cinema. Who it is for: viewers who like morally uncomfortable black comedy. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for the protagonist to be punished; the film does not oblige.
