Daniel Hanssens What My Life in Pink Is About
Seven-year-old Ludovic wants to live as a girl and describes this not as a wish but as an error that will shortly be corrected. Her family, newly arrived in a tidy suburb, is amused, then embarrassed, then frightened, and the neighbours and the school prove incapable of letting it go. Alain Berliner stays on the child's side without turning the adults into monsters; their fear is filmed too. The pink doll world Ludo escapes into gives the film both its title and its saddest joke. It won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film in 1998.
