What My Little Sister Is About
The 2020 Swiss film by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond follows Lisa, a playwright, and her twin brother Sven, being treated for leukaemia. Lisa has moved to Switzerland with her husband and stopped writing; her brother's illness calls her back to Berlin and to her own work. The matter at the centre is that giving care can be an escape as much as an act of love: while looking after her brother, Lisa moves away from her marriage and her own decisions. The rapport between Nina Hoss and Lars Eidinger carries the film. The story does not reach for emotional steering and the ending is measured. The subject is heavy and the pace slow. Who it's for: viewers who like European family drama and performance-centred films. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding themes of illness and death, or wanting incident.
