What My Sunny Maad Is About
Herra, who fell in love with Nazir, an Afghan, while studying at a Czech university, settles with him in Kabul. In the city of the years after the Taliban she enters a large family: a liberal grandfather, a highly intelligent adopted child, and Freshta, who is trying to get free of her husband’s violence. The woman carries at once the weight of being a foreigner and of being a daughter-in-law, and tries to reconcile her own life with the rules of the place. Michaela Pavlátová’s eighty one minute Czech animation was adapted from a novel and shows the country neither as somewhere to be saved nor as scenery. It was completed in 2021.
