Narcosis

A father who works as a professional cave diver does not come back from a dive, leaving his wife Merel and their two children behind. With no body found there can be no funeral and no farewell, and the house becomes a place full of memories; each of them looks for an explanation alone, telling no one. While Merel tries to get away from everything that belonged to her husband, her son does the opposite and goes towards the water where his father disappeared. The film treats mourning not as a ceremony but as a question that will not close, and uses the silence under water as its equivalent. In Martijn de Jong’s hundred and twelve minute Dutch film, Thekla Reuten plays Merel and Fedja van Huêt the father, with Sepp Ritsema and Lola van Zoggel in the cast. It was completed in 2022.
