What National Mechanics Is About
Luis Alcoriza's 1972 Mexican film starts with the owner of a repair shop taking his family and friends off to a motor race. They get stuck in an enormous traffic jam on the way, and as the hours pass a day that was meant to be a picnic turns into a portrait of a group eating itself: fights, betrayals, showing off, coarseness and a death. The film plays all of it as black comedy and spares nobody; it is a hard, direct satire aimed at the Mexican middle class. At the fifteenth Ariel Awards it took best picture and best director, and Lucha Villa was named best actress.
