What National Theatre Live: Angels In America - Part Two: Perestroika Is About
Marianne Elliott's 2017 stage recording contains the second part of Tony Kushner's two-part play. Set in New York in the mid-eighties, it follows characters wrestling with illness, faith, politics and abandonment during the AIDS crisis. The second part begins where the first left off and brings its fantastical elements forward. The angel, the ghosts and the scenes in heaven enter the realist narrative; the play uses them not as escape but as another reality produced by the illness. Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane lead. The stage design stays visible and the set changes are made in front of the audience. It runs close to four hours and the recording follows theatre capture standards. Who it's for: those who like theatre recordings and queer stage history. Who it's not for: viewers who have not seen the first part; the play continues from where that ended and does not stand alone.
