Neecha Nagar

Sarkar is a wealthy landowner. He wants to put up a property development. To clear the ground he directs the waste towards the village. The village lies below. Its water and its soil are ruined. The villagers are poor people. They stand against him all the same. Balraj leads the resistance. A struggle starts between the two sides. The film sets it up as a question of class. It was Chetan Anand’s first film. Ravi Shankar wrote the music, his first score for a film, and Kamini Kaushal appeared for the first time in it. The film took the grand prize at the first Cannes festival in 1946, shared with about ten other films, Rome Open City among them. Rafiq Anwar and Uma Anand appear in the hundred and two minute film, an Indian production Chetan Anand finished in 1946.
