Nice and Easy

Sébastien's only aim in life is to do nothing. He does not want to work, does not want to plan, and his horizon does not extend past the sofa; he wants to contemplate life rather than live it. He defends this not as laziness but as a position. His flatmates and Anna, whom he has just met, begin to test it. Benjamin Guedj writes and directs in his first film. Baptiste Lecaplain, Charlotte Le Bon and Félix Moati are in the cast. It opened in France on 7 May 2014. The tone is close to Cédric Klapisch's early work: a shared flat, the twenties, the obligation to find work, and scenes that rest entirely on talk. The idea belongs to a generation. Sébastien's idleness is presented as an answer to an economic condition: a cohort that cannot find work choosing not to look. Its limit is that it cannot carry the idea to the end. The narrative turns at a certain point into the shape of the genre and decides to change the character, which weakens the objection it had built. Baptiste Lecaplain was known as a stand up comedian and this is his first lead. Who it is for: viewers who like French comedies about young people and shared flat narratives. Who it is not for: little happens, the humour is light, and the ending goes where it is expected to.
