Night Comes On

Angel is released from juvenile detention on the eve of her eighteenth birthday. She has an address and a plan. First she collects her ten-year-old sister Abby from her foster home, and then the two of them set off. Angel tells her sister this is a trip to the sea. What she is really looking for is their father, whom she holds responsible for their mother's death. It is Jordana Spiro's first feature; known as an actor, Spiro has moved behind the camera here. Dominique Fishback plays Angel and keeps the character hard and closed; she neither cries nor explains. Tatum Marilyn Hall is the younger sister. The film starts like a revenge story but does not arrive there; what it really tells is how the two sisters hold on to each other. Eighty-seven minutes.
