Night in Paradise

A Korean crime drama. Tae-gu works for a gang. A rival organisation kills his sister and his niece. He answers, and then he has to leave the country. They send him to Jeju Island; he will hide for a few days and then take a boat to Russia. On the island he stays at an arms dealer's house. There is a woman there too: the dealer's niece Jae-yeon, seriously ill and refusing treatment. The two do not speak. Then slowly they start to; neither has anything left to lose and each recognises it in the other. The first half is calm: the island, the sea, meals and empty days. The second half is very hard; the violence arrives suddenly and does not stop. The subject is not revenge but that revenge brings nothing back. Um Tae-goo plays Tae-gu and Jeon Yeo-been plays Jae-yeon. Park Hoon-jung directed; he had made New World earlier. It was released on a streaming service. A strong example within its genre for anyone who likes Korean crime cinema. Before you watch, know this: the violence in the last section is very heavy and the film grants no character a way out.
