What Nightmares Is About
The film takes place in the part of Poland under Austrian occupation before the First World War. We follow a boy in primary school; then, in the same school in the years when the movement toward independence is rising, he becomes a rebellious youth with a turn for poetry. The account takes up growing up not on its own but inside an order of suppression built jointly by church and state, and the school is that order’s most visible place. The film declares no side to be right; it records the boy’s contact with that order. Its visual construction stands close to memory and far from plot. Piotr Lysak plays the lead in Wojciech Marczewski’s hundred minute Polish film, completed in 1979.
