What No Surrender Is About

New Year’s Eve, in a seedy nightclub in Liverpool. The place is the deindustrialising Britain of the eighties. That night two separate parties of pensioners arrive at the club. One is Irish Protestant, the other Irish Catholic. Their landing in the same room is no accident; somebody arranged it on purpose. As the night goes on the old quarrels come to the table. The club’s new manager tries to hold things together and can do nothing. The film handles a sectarian divide through dark comedy. Michael Angelis and Bernard Hill take the leads, with Ray McAnally and Joanne Whalley also in the cast, in Peter Smith’s British film of 1985.
