What Nova Lituania Is About
Between the two wars a Lithuanian professor of geography can see his country being wiped off the map, and proposes an odd solution: found a backup state somewhere overseas. The idea is mostly mocked, but the elderly prime minister, thoroughly disillusioned with politics, quietly stands behind him. Karolis Kaupinis made his first feature in black and white, drawing on Kazys Pakstas, the geographer who really did argue for a spare country. It holds a small nation’s fear of disappearing somewhere between comedy and grief, and was sent forward as Lithuania’s Oscar entry.
