What O Filho Eterno Is About
Roberto, a writer, is expecting his first child and imagines his son’s arrival as the point where his own life turns. When the boy is born with Down syndrome every one of those plans collapses, and the man is ashamed first, then absent, and finally forced to face the shame itself. The subject of the film is not the child but the father’s road. Paulo Machline made it from Cristóvão Tezza’s 2007 novel of the same name, scripted by Leonardo Levis. The book, drawn from Tezza’s own life, had won Brazil’s main literary prizes including the Jabuti. Marcos Veras plays the father and Débora Falabella the mother.
