Oceans Are the Real Continents

The film is set in San Antonio de los Baños, a small town in the interior of Cuba. Three separate lives run alongside one another. Alex and Edith are a couple in their thirties; their relationship is made of small gestures and everyday work. Milagros is old and retired; she gets by selling peanuts and spends her days listening to the radio and reading old letters. Frank and Alain are nine year old friends; they go to school and dream of going to America to play baseball. The same shadow lies over all three stories: separation. The film sets that down as the real affliction of Cuban society, and that assessment is the film’s own. The hundred and twenty minutes are shared among three lives. Tommaso Santambrogio’s film, a joint Cuban and Italian production, was completed in 2023.
