Two young men, Aleksei Trofimov and Ivan Varravva, meet in the ranks of the Red Army. The years do not keep them in one place: the civil war of the early twenties, China, the Urals, Finland, then the front. The uniforms change and the borders change; the two of them do not. Throughout their friendship they love the same woman, Lyuba, and it never comes between them. The film tells their lives as the story of a generation. Vladimir Rogovoy directs, with Georgiy Yumatov, Vasili Lanovoy and Alina Pokrovskaya. More than fifty-three million people saw it in the Soviet Union. One line from it is still repeated today: there is such a profession, defending the motherland.
