What Omertà Is About
Hansal Mehta's 2018 Indian film dramatises the life of the British-born Omar Sheikh. It follows a man educated in London into armed organisations, and on to the kidnapping and killing of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002. Sheikh was sentenced to death in Pakistan for that in 2002. The legal record now stands differently: the Sindh High Court overturned the murder conviction in 2020, leaving a kidnapping conviction; Pakistan's Supreme Court upheld the acquittal in 2021 and ordered his release, and he continued to be held nonetheless. The film was made before those rulings. Rajkummar Rao leads and carries it.
