What Once in a Summer Is About
Joh Keun-shik's 2006 Korean film reaches back into the past through a television programme that reunites lost people. When Yun Suk-young, a famous professor who keeps away from people, agrees to appear, the love he lived in a village at the end of the sixties opens up: a young librarian and the political pressure of those years. At its centre is how a private love was cut off by a political order; the separation is not a choice but the result of an interrogation room. Lee Byung-hun carries both time frames. The story goes where the genre is expected to go and the emotional steering is overt, but the period detail and Soo Ae's performance pull it a little above the template. Who it's for: viewers who like Korean melodrama and period love stories. Who it's not for: anyone put off by emotional steering, or avoiding scenes of torture and political repression.
