What Once Upon a Time in Ukraine Is About
A samurai named Akayo comes into Ukrainian territory to settle a score; the man he is after is Harimoto, who buys slaves from a Ukrainian landowner. On the way he meets Taras, a serf with a reckoning of his own, trying to get the woman he loves out of bondage. A third companion is hunting the men who killed his younger brother. Roman Perfilyev builds the film as a samurai western and imagines Taras Shevchenko putting down the pen and picking up a katana, turning the founding figure of Ukrainian literature into a piece of alternative history. It opened in Ukraine in 2020 and did not travel outside the country until 2023. The Turkish and English summaries in the record describe the same film but give different names and a different order of events, one making the abductor a slave trader and the other the buyer.
