One Day Before the Rainy Season

The film is adapted from a play in three acts. Its subject is the love between the poet Kalidasa and Mallika. Kalidasa is a poet and playwright who wrote in Sanskrit. The two live in a village at the foot of the mountains. Vilom is a friend to both of them. He is also drawn to Mallika. Through the opening two acts he stays silent. Kalidasa is called to the distant city of Ujjain. There he wins fame. Mallika keeps her love in the background. She gives up her own path so the poet can keep writing. Years later Kalidasa returns to the village. He finds Mallika married to Vilom. They have a child. The film tells the events in a calm and measured register. Rekha Sabnis and Arun Khopkar appear in the one hundred fourteen minute film, an Indian production Mani Kaul finished in 1971.
