Michalis Iatropoulos What One Day in August Is About
Constantine Giannaris’s film takes place in Athens on the fifteenth of August, the feast of the Virgin in the Orthodox calendar and, for Athenians, mainly a reason to empty the city. Three families in a three-storey building leave for their holidays, each of them hoping for some kind of miracle that summer. While they are gone a burglar lets himself into the flats and goes through their belongings, and what each household has been keeping quiet comes out one after another. The film uses a stranger’s gaze as the key that opens three separate lives, turning the emptiness of the city into a sort of confessional. It played in competition at Berlin in 2002.
