One on One

Henry Steele, the star of high school basketball in a small town, goes to a big-city university on a scholarship. There he discovers he has nothing besides the sport. The coach's expectations are heavy, the money side of college athletics starts becoming visible, and Henry has one more problem: he never properly learned to read. Janet, assigned as his tutor, gives Henry what nobody else does: she deals with him as a person rather than as a player. When the coach moves to cancel the scholarship, the reckoning begins. Robby Benson, who plays the lead, is among the writers of the screenplay. It is one of the few films of the seventies to look directly at American college sport turning into a business.
