Elena is thirty five. Jake is twenty six. One New Year's Eve they hail the same taxi and go together. The relationship starts fast and goes well. Then the question of a child comes. They start trying. It does not happen. They go to a doctor, begin treatment, and the process stretches out: injections, calendars, waiting and the result that comes every month. The relationship itself starts to disappear underneath it. Elena is worn down by her age being discussed, Jake does not know what to say, and the two grow lonely in the same room. Harry Wootliff writes and directs. Laia Costa plays Elena and Josh O'Connor plays Jake. It is a British production. The process is given with its medical detail; the stages of fertility treatment are inside the narrative and are not simplified. The matter it works at is not infertility but a relationship turning into a goal, and the film shows that plainly. The difference in age stands inside the narrative but the film does not build it as a problem on its own. The photography is close and handheld; the narrative takes place largely in rooms holding two people. The ending offers no reconciliation and the narrative puts neither of them in the right. It was shown at festivals and drew attention as the director's first feature. Who it is for: viewers who like realist relationship drama. Who it is not for: the subject is heavy, the pace slow, and the narrative offers no hope.
