What Operation Amsterdam Is About
As Germany enters the Netherlands in May 1940, a British intelligence officer and two Dutch diamond merchants are sent to Amsterdam; their task is to get the industrial diamonds in the city out to England before the Germans reach them. The city is being bombed, the roads are closing and it is unclear who can be trusted; the keys to the vaults are in different hands and there are only hours. The film was adapted from a real case and part of it was shot in Amsterdam. The account shows less heroism than the confusion of the first days of the war and ordinary people who have to move fast. Peter Finch and Eva Bartok appear in Michael McCarthy’s hundred and four minute British film; it was completed in 1959.
