This 1985 Norwegian film, directed together by Ola Solum and Tristan de Vere Cole, is adapted from Jon Michelet's novel. Three seamen scraping a living around the Svalbard archipelago, Tom, Lars and Sverre, work out that the Soviets are up to something there besides mining coal. What they find is a secret far larger than the three of them, and they quickly become targets both of Soviet units and of Western intelligence. It plays the northern edge of the Cold War in thriller shape. The film was shot in two languages at once: Solum directed the Norwegian scenes and Cole directed the English versions of the same scenes.
