What Out of My Mind Is About
Melody, a sixth grader, cannot speak and uses a wheelchair because of cerebral palsy. Her intelligence and her humour are entirely intact and nobody at school sees it; because nothing is expected of her, nothing is asked of her either. When a teacher notices and brings her into a mainstream class, first a communication device appears and then Melody herself. The most important decision in the film is the casting: Phoebe-Rae Taylor, who plays Melody, has cerebral palsy herself. Adapted from Sharon Draper's novel. The bullying scenes are not softened.
