What Outcast of the Islands Is About
When the fraud he has been running at the trading company comes out, Peter Willems loses his position, his standing and any prospect of staying where he is. He talks Lingard, the sea captain who gave him his start, into carrying him off to a remote island trading post. He arrives there as exactly the same man: always wanting more, always certain he is owed it, turning every relationship into a negotiation. Carol Reed adapted Joseph Conrad, and Trevor Howard's Willems is a lead with no sympathy anywhere in him. The film refuses to use the colonial setting as exotic decor and looks instead at what the newcomer brings with him. Reed made it straight after The Third Man, and though far less famous it is one of his harshest.
