Panayotis Pascot: Almost

French comedian Panayotis Pascot's 2022 stand-up show may be a sharp surprise for anyone who knows him as the young television correspondent. On stage Pascot makes material out of his own life: his relationship with his father, desires he could not name as an adolescent, first sexual experiences, depression, and finally accepting that he is gay. The show keeps closing the distance between confession and joke; the harder the subject, the faster the joke arrives, and the audience is left unsure where to laugh. That unease is the show's own method. It became one of the most talked-about pieces from the younger generation of French stand-up. The register is personal, leaning on his biography rather than political or social observation. Who it's for: viewers who like personal, exposed stand-up. Who it's not for: anyone wanting light everyday comedy; a good deal of this material hurts.
