Fielder Cook's 1956 film is adapted from Rod Serling's television play and takes place entirely inside a company building. Fred Staples is a capable manager brought in from the provinces to the head office in New York and given a good room. He soon realises that his real assignment is to replace Briggs, an older executive who has given the firm years of work. Rather than dismiss Briggs outright, the boss Ramsey humiliates him in meetings to force a resignation, and Staples becomes part of the mechanism. The film presents corporate violence not as shouting or threat but as pressure built out of quiet, courteous sentences. It is heavy on dialogue and staged close to theatre. Everett Sloane's boss is far from one-dimensional. Who it's for: viewers who like American drama of the fifties and workplace stories. Who it's not for: anyone expecting visual variety; the film never leaves the offices.
