What Pauline & Paulette Is About
Pauline is sixty six, intellectually disabled, and has been cared for all her life by her sister Martha. When Martha dies the two younger sisters, Paulette and Cecile, have to decide who takes her on. Both have their own life and their own excuse. The will is unambiguous, though: the money is split three ways only if one of the sisters looks after Pauline, and if she is put in an institution she inherits all of it. Lieven Debrauwer sets that arithmetic up without mercy and then quietly asks what sisterhood is. It played in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.
