What Payday Is About
Daryl Duke’s 1973 film follows about a day and a half in the life of the country singer Maury Dann. Rip Torn plays him working the honky-tonk circuit of the South out of a Cadillac, certain that his charm and his talent will cover anything he does. He sleeps with fans, starts fights, breaks the law and assumes his manager, his driver and his long-suffering girlfriend will clean up behind him. The film neither punishes nor redeems him; it just keeps showing what the people around him are paying. The novelist Don Carpenter wrote the screenplay and it was shot in and around Selma, Alabama. It is one of the few films in which Torn carried the lead.
