What Pee-wee's Big Adventure Is About
Tim Burton's 1985 film follows a man whose bicycle is stolen. He sets out to find it. Every stop brings another oddity. The film abandons logic on purpose; the narrative carries the aesthetic of children's television into cinema. Paul Reubens both leads and co-wrote the screenplay. It is the director's first feature. The score is by Danny Elfman. Who it's for: those who like strange, colourful comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a coherent plot; the film is childlike by design.
