What Pistol: The Birth of a Legend Is About
The film picks up Pete Maravich long before he was famous, in the eighth grade. He has made the high school team but is repeatedly kept off the floor because of his age and his size, and the only person behind him is his father Press Maravich, a former professional player. Made in 1991 from a real life, it is not about the beginning of a great career but about the stubbornness that came before it. The story visits the stops a sports film is expected to visit, but what it is actually interested in is the relationship between father and son, and the question of when a father's expectation is support and when it is weight.
