What Poison Friends Is About
Emmanuel Bourdieu’s 2006 film follows a group of literature students. André enters the lives of Eloi and Alexandre and becomes their friend, mentor, spiritual director and intellectual authority, the person who decides who will write what and what is worth anything. The difficulty is that nothing André says about himself is true. The film is less interested in how the lie is exposed than in why people hand over the job of thinking to somebody else in the first place. It opened Critics’ Week at Cannes and took both the section’s grand prize and its screenwriting award. Malik Zidi, Thibault Vinçon and Dominique Blanc are in the cast.
