Poongsan

A man whose name nobody knows crosses the border between North and South Korea again and again. His work is carrying messages, photographs and belongings between families the war separated. Nobody knows how he gets across; what he charges is very little. One day South Korean intelligence asks him to bring a woman out of the North: she is the lover of a high-ranking official who has defected to the South. Juhn Jai-hong directed the film from a screenplay by Kim Ki-duk, who also produced it; Kim's familiar hardness and his preference for a hero who barely speaks are both here. The main character does not say a single word in the whole film. The telling looks at both states with the same eye: both use the same man, and both look at him with the same suspicion. Yoon Kye-sang is in the lead. The violence is hard and detailed.
