Possessive

Edwin's 2017 Indonesian film follows the relationship between Lala, a secondary school student advancing in competitive diving, and Yudhis, a new arrival at the school. The relationship intensifies fast and his possessiveness turns into threat; Lala's relationship with her own father carries the same logic of control. What stands out is framing the violence not as a deviation but as a continuity: the father's pressure and the boyfriend's speak the same language. Treating the subject this clearly was unusual in mainstream Indonesian films about young people. Putri Marino's first film performance is strong. The final section resolves too abruptly. Who it's for: viewers interested in Indonesian cinema and films that treat violence inside relationships. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding content involving violence and psychological pressure, or wanting a comforting romance.
