Final-year school students play a trick on their teacher: on the day of the exam they claim she gave them a different date. She nearly believes them, until an honest classmate spoils it, and now they want to get back at him. Vladimir Menshov’s first feature carries the pupils’ obsession with music, the hierarchy of the classroom, questions of leadership and first love all at once. It was shot in 1976, opened on 10 January 1977 and won prizes at the festival in Riga that year. Dmitry Kharatyan, then sixteen, appeared in a film for the first time. Alexander Flyarkovsky’s Farewell Waltz was heard here first and went on to become the song of Soviet school leaving ceremonies.
